Stony Hill School & Flag Day Foundation, Waubeka

Ozaukee County, Wisconsin Luxembourgish roots Memorials & markers

Bernard J. Cigrand, the ‘Father of Flag Day,’ was born in Waubeka to immigrants from Bourglinster and Mensdorf, Luxembourg. As an 18-year-old teacher at the one-room Stony Hill School, he held the first Flag Day observance on June 14, 1885. The restored schoolhouse is preserved as an Ozaukee County park.

Nearby, the National Flag Day Foundation’s Americanism Center displays a bronze bust of Cigrand — a gift from Luxembourg’s Ministry of Culture in 2000.
