St. Nicholas Church, Dacada

Sheboygan County, Wisconsin Churches & religious sites

The parish of St. Nicholas in Dacada, founded in 1848 by Luxembourgish settlers, holds what is considered the oldest statue of Our Lady of Luxembourg in the United States — brought over in 1849 by immigrant Anna Margaret Deppiesse. Local legend embellishes the crossing: one telling has the statue sawed in half to hide it in transit.

The parish closed in 1998, but the 1911 brick church survives as a chapel and the statue remains.
