Sheldon, New York

Wyoming County, New York Founded by Luxembourgers Luxembourgish roots

The Town of Sheldon in western New York holds a special place in Luxembourg-American history: the Library of Congress treats it as the first Luxembourger colony in the United States, with settlers arriving around 1833–1835. For many families it was a stepping stone — a generation later, Sheldon names reappear across the settlements of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.
