Hesburgh–King Monument, South Bend

In Leighton Plaza in downtown South Bend, a bronze by sculptor Tuck Langland, unveiled in 2017, recreates the famous 1964 Soldier Field photograph of Fr. Theodore Hesburgh and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. joining hands in song at a civil-rights rally.

Hesburgh, Notre Dame’s transformative president and a giant of American civic life, traced his paternal line to emigrants who left Luxembourg in 1848.
