Chicago’s Greenhouse District (Edgewater & Rogers Park)

Cook County, Illinois Luxembourgish roots

Chicago’s north-side neighborhoods of Edgewater and Rogers Park were the center of Luxembourgish truck farming in America. By 1906 some 1,200 Luxembourg-American greenhouse families worked the district, and by 1910 most of Chicago’s roughly one hundred greenhouses were Luxembourg-owned — the famous ‘glass houses’ that supplied the city’s vegetables and flowers.

The Luxembourg Brotherhood of America, founded on Chicago’s south side in 1887, soon counted the greenhouse district among its strongholds, and its sections remain active in the region today.
