Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey
The devotion at Carey began with Fr. Joseph Peter Gloden, a Luxembourg-born priest who arrived in 1873. On May 24, 1875, an oak replica of the statue of Our Lady of Consolation venerated in Luxembourg Cathedral was carried in procession to Carey and enshrined — the seed of what is now a national basilica and shrine drawing pilgrims from across the country.
The present basilica is a twentieth-century building; the 1875 statue and the Luxembourgish devotion it carried remain its heart.
